After Arthur Waagen (Germany, 1833-1898) "Whippet" Antique Bronze Sculpture Signed "Waagen" on the base, no Foundry MarkLast quarter of the 19th Century, Patinated BronzeItem # 120112IPP07039 This is a very fine casting of " Whippet ", after the original by sculptor Arthur Waagen (German, 1833-1898), this work likely cast during the last quarter of the 19th Century. The antique bronze sculpture is signed on the base by impression, no foundry mark visible on the exterior of the casting - we have not removed the wooden insert inside the base to examine for an impressed mark as it would not impact value even if one were located. The detail captured in this cast is simply above reproach, the dog with simply outstanding form, playful and curious in expression. Her muscles are tensed and taught as she turns to look at the leafage and flowers on the ground, appearing to be ready to pounce or twist on a moments notice. She wears a thick leather buckle around her neck, the bones peeking through her thin skin along the legs, the pads and nails so clearly distinguished to be almost sharp to the touch. She rests over a modeled grounded base. This is one of Waagen's most famous and recognizable works, one that has had many casts after the period - however, if you closely compare the details and patina, this work will quickly be identified as superior. Several similar examples after the period have images information available for review at Freeman's, Christies and Sotheby's. This is a stunning and commanding piece that you will treasure in your collection for a lifetime - with wonderful large dimensions at 21 1/2" length and 16 1/2" height, this antique bronze sculpture is perfect as a strikepoint work on any chest of drawers or hall table.
